Planning a break that feels miles away without the airport faff The New Forest is made for easy-going staycations – big skies, ancient woodland and those famous ponies wandering by. Base yourself at The Mortimer Arms and you can dip in and out of everything the National Park offers, with good food and a comfy bed waiting when you’re done.
Why choose the New Forest for a staycation
- Short travel times from most of the South – you’ll be breathing forest air before you know it
- Walks for every mood – from gentle loops to longer rambles across heath and woodland
- Proper wildlife moments – ponies, donkeys and deer if you’re lucky
- Coast within easy reach – Lymington, Lepe and Mudeford for salty breezes and fish and chips
- Family attractions on the doorstep – including Paultons Park for a day of rides and smiles
Where we fit in
We’re a traditional country inn on the edge of the New Forest, just off Junction 2 of the M27 and right by the entrance to Paultons Park. That means simple arrivals, easy parking and a relaxed pub downstairs when you get back. Rooms upstairs are comfortable and unfussy, breakfast is hearty, and the team is on hand with local tips.
A simple 2 day plan
Day 1 – Forest and food
Arrive late morning, drop your bags and head out for a gentle loop near Lyndhurst or Brockenhurst. Keep your phone handy for pony photos, but give them space. Wander back for an early supper with us – think warming pies, seasonal specials and a pint or a glass of red to round things off.
Day 2 – Coast and villages
Start with breakfast, then take a short drive to the coast. Lepe Country Park is lovely for an easy shoreline walk and wide sea views. On the way back, stop in Beaulieu or Burley for a stroll around the village shops and tea rooms. Back to us for a relaxed dinner and feet up.
Travelling with kids
Paultons Park is next door, so it’s simple to mix a forest day with a theme park day. We have family friendly rooms and a children’s menu for hungry explorers. If you’re visiting in summer, pack swimmers for the park’s splash areas. In cooler months, bring layers and a spare pair of socks – the forest has a habit of finding puddles.
Rainy day ideas
- Beaulieu – the National Motor Museum, Palace House and gardens
- New Forest Wildlife Park – otters, owls and more
- Lymington – independent shops, cobbled quay and good coffee
- Cosy pub time – board games, a hot chocolate and something sweet from the dessert board
What to pack
- Comfortable shoes or boots – the gravel tracks and heath can be uneven
- Layers – the weather can switch from sunny to breezy in a minute
- Reusable water bottles and a small rucksack for hassle free walks
